Being Successful in Business is NOT an EGO Driven Exercise! Free Article
Feb 1st, 2009 | Categories: Publisher's BlogWell, it’s been my experience that too many business owners talk about how much they want someone to “help” them get done all the day-to-day tasks needed to run their business; and too many of us just don’t seem to get that “help”! BUT WHY? Is it that we don’t believe that anyone else can do an effective job? Or is that we don’t spend sufficient time trying to find and train that perfect “helper”? I could go on and on asking these sort of questions…but instead, I’m just gonna give you the answer!
The problem may very well be with YOU!!
Now, before you get all upset and click off this page, hear me out. For most business owners, your business is YOUR baby! You gave it life. You nurtured it through its infancy stages. You spent too many late, sleepless nights caring for your baby or worrying about “what’s next” and “am I doing a good job”. Now, you may have to step back and trust someone else with your baby! I have 2 pieces of advice that have helped me, as well as dozens of other entrepreneurs realize their dream of achieving true success!
1) Define YOUR Roles in Your Company – As a business owner you CANNOT allow yourself to wear TOO MANY hats. If you are just starting out OR you started your business in the last 5 years, there is a pretty good chance you personally do the bulk of the work for your company. This work probably includes marketing and selling your services, handling the production of your product or service, keeping track of the money that goes in and out of your business and maybe even managing a handful of employees. When you started your business, you probably wanted your entrepreneurial experience to be a financially rewarding chance to make your mark in the world. This CAN be done without you being the only person responsible to getting things done! The first step is to take the time to do a bit of soul searching and determine YOUR personal worth within your company. Once you define the skill sets in which you excel, you need to delegate those tasks that do not require your absolute attention to be completed with effectiveness.
2) Realize YOUR Weaknesses – Being successful in business IS NOT an ego driven exercise! The sooner you realize that you DO NOT and CAN NOT do everything necessary for your company to be a powerhouse in the marketplace, the better! Find ANY successful person that is successful at ANYTHING and they’ll all have one thing in common…they had help! Tiger Woods plays a non-team sport and may arguably be one of the single greatest athletes in the world. But he didn’t get there without help. He had coaches working to perfect his swing since he was 4 years old. Yes, maybe his father was his first coach, but he was still there for his son. Tiger doesn’t carry his own golf bag and his caddy is one of the highest paid people in his profession! Why is that? He helps Tiger make critical decisions in specific situations on the course. I also doubt that Tiger handles all his own travel arrangements on the tour and he most definitely employs some significantly intelligent people to manage his money and career development. As awesome as you are, you still can only do so much. The sooner you realize that getting someone to do the things that you may not do extremely well or to do those tasks that can be delegated to someone else without your company falling apart, the sooner you can focus on growth and profitability!
Hearing what someone else has to say on this subject is only the first step in changing your current situation. But what are you going do about it? Are you going to take action? If so, when are you going to start? What’s stopping you? Need I go back to my original answer? Does the problem ultimately start and stop with YOU? True success starts with the ability to take ACTION! If you don’t have anyone to kick you in the butt and get you started…call or email me! I know someone that can help!!
